USCIS civics test questions and answers
Written and reviewed by the CivicsMate editorial team, checked against official USCIS sources.
Last reviewed: July 9, 2026
There is no single list of USCIS civics test questions: two official lists are in use at the same time, and studying the wrong one is the most common preparation mistake. Which list you need depends on one thing, the date you filed your Form N-400 (the citizenship application). Find your version below, then open your list.
Which list applies to you
Check the receipt date on your receipt notice, Form I-797C (the letter USCIS sent after you applied), and compare it to October 20, 2025. The filing date decides your version; your interview date does not matter. If your date is close to the cutoff or you want the full side-by-side comparison, see which citizenship test you take: 100 vs 128.

The 100 questions (2008 test)
For applicants who filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025. The list has three sections: American government, American history, and integrated civics (geography, symbols, holidays).
Both tests are oral: the officer asks the questions out loud and you answer out loud. Open the full 2008 list with official answers and study explanations.
The 128 questions (2025 test)
For applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. The list has three sections: American government, American history, and symbols and holidays.
